The Queen

The Queen portrays the events leading up to and following the death of Princess Diana. The film gives a behind the scenes glimpse at the interaction between HM Elizabeth II and Prime Minister Tony Blair during their struggle to reach a compromise between what was a private tragedy for the Royal family and the public's demand for an overt display of mourning. It's not a heavy, heart-wrenching film, in fact at times it is positively light hearted, but Helen Mirren gives an incredible performance, well let's face it she's up for every award out there. Not to be missed.

The History Boys

Based on an Alan Bennet play of the same name the film is set in the mid 1980's in a Sheffield English grammar school. The story centres around a group of grammar school students studying for their Oxbridge entrance exams. A newcomer is  brought in to coach the brightest of them on how to impress the examiners at Oxford and Cambridge and the stage is set for a battle between stuffy tradition and modern techniques. The soundtrack is great and there's a lot of fun to be had in guessing where each boy will end up in life.
