Recommended English Films

Films are a great way to improve your English.  Going to the cinema is ok, and hiring DVDs is even better, because then you are in control.

Watching them alone is okay, but watching them with your friends and then talking about them is even better.

You can discuss the films you've seen on the forum:-

Avatar

British cinema

Last night I went to see my first 3D film. Maybe that shows my age, but the experience was brilliant! And yet I was amazed how quickly I became used to it and stopped jumping every time something came shooting out towards me!   Anyway, you may gather I went to see Avatar.

Sherlock Holmes

British cinema

Britain's favourite detective Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart partner Watson return in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a threat to all of England.  This is a new interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's greatest character by Guy Ritchie, and Robert Downey Jr as Holmes and Jude Law as Watson pull out all the stops.  There are, believe it or not, stunts and special effects galore as Ritchie brings Holmes into the cinematic world of CGI.

The Fantastic Mr Fox

British cinema

"Boggis and Bunce and Bean, One short, one fat, one lean. These horrible crooks, so different in looks, were nonetheless equally mean."

A Christmas Carol

British cinema

Another retelling of Charles Dickens' classic novel about a Victorian-era miser taken on a journey of self-redemption, courtesy of several mysterious Christmas apparitions, but this one's in 3D!  OK so that doesn't come across here, but go to your local iMax and it will blow your socks off!

The Invention of Lying

British cinema

Ricky Gervais is one of my favourite British comedians and this film is a great vehicle for his talents.  In a world where everyone can only tell the truth he learns to lie, he seizes the opportunity for personal gain.  The results are hilarious,  but like most of the best films it also makes you think.  I've always known how awful it would be if everyone told the truth all the time.  Every day we tell those little white lies, and to be honest, they make the world a nicer place.
