Recommended English Films

Films are a great way to improve your English.  Going to the cinema is ok, and hiring DVDs is even better, because then you are in control.

Watching them alone is okay, but watching them with your friends and then talking about them is even better.

You can discuss the films you've seen on the forum:-

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

If you enjoyed the last film, I'm sure you'll enjoy this one.  Based on the third book in the series, in Narnia Lucy and Edmund Pevensie return to Narnia with their cousin Eustace where they meet up with Prince Caspian for a trip across the sea aboard the royal ship The Dawn Treader. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors, before reaching the edge of the world.  Perfect fare for Christmas.

London River

British cinema

In the wake of the 2005 terror attack on the city of London, two strangers travel there to find their missing children.   The mother, Elizabeth, a fifty something woman living in Guernsey, and perfectly content to work the earth on her farm, knows her daughter lived close to where the events took place, but when she goes there she meets a man, Ousmane, a man of African descent who is searching for his son.  The film charts their efforts to find out what happened to their children on this terrible day, as the two of them continue their search together and slowly find out more about themselves and each other.

IT’S not often that you get a glimpse first hand of the thought process behind a major film production.  Therefore I was eagerly awaiting the showing of a new film, Made in Dagenham, which has already received plaudits abroad and which some observers have likened to The Full Monty and Billy Elliot - two British films which became worldwide hits.

Billy Elliot

British cinema

Set during the bitter 1984 Miner's Strike, Billy Elliot is the story of an 11 year old boy who doesn't like the brutal boxing lessons at school and develops a passion for ballet instead.  He faces many trials and triumphs as he strives to conquer his family's prejudices, and his own inner conflict.  Will he achieve his dream?
